Crucial lessons from real hiker rescues and learn how to prevent emergencies on the trail. ✅ *LATEST GEAR LIST: https://hikingguy.com/best-hiking-gear/ ♥️ Patreon (free or paid): / hikingguy In this video, I walk through some real-life search and rescue cases to break down what went wrong and, more importantly, what we can learn from them. It kicks off with a story from Southern California, where two hikers fell 800 feet down an icy slope in the San Jacinto Mountains and ended up stranded for three days. It's a powerful reminder—especially in winter—why carrying a satellite communicator and being ready to spend the night, even on a day hike, is so important. I also cover a story out of New Hampshire where a hiker had all the right gear—tent, traction, the ten essentials—but still got into trouble when he lost the trail in deep snow without snowshoes. He used his iPhone's satellite SOS to get help, which worked, but again shows how having the right gear for the conditions is just as important as having a backup communication option. And then there’s my conversation with Ben Brooks, a health educator and outdoor pro, who shares what happened during a canyoning trip in Utah when someone in his group got injured. They ended up using both an iPhone’s satellite SOS and a Garmin inReach Mini 2 to coordinate a rescue. Hearing how both tools played a role really drives home the value of redundancy—because when things go bad out there, you want every advantage you can get. ♥️ SAY THANKS: https://hikingguy.com/support-hiking-... #survival #hiking #hike #hikingvlog #hikinggear #hikingtrails #hikingandcamping #hikingandcampingforbeginners #hikingandcampingvlog #hikingandbackpacking #52HikeChallenge #backpacking #healthyliving #trails #outdoors #nature
