Island Medicine: A Talk by Dr. Chuck Radis

The Rockland Public Library is pleased to present this recording of our event with Dr. Chuck Radis. We apologize for some technical difficulties about halfway through that cut out some of the program from the recording. Dr. Chuck Radis was drawn to a career in medicine after meeting an osteopathic family practice bush pilot in Baja, Mexico. Following an internal medicine residency, the young doctor moved his family to Peaks Island off the coast of Maine and traveled by boat to the four year-round islands in Casco Bay, logging more than 100 house calls each year. Island Medicine follows Dr. Radis’ first book, Go by Boat, with a new batch of stories filled with equal parts hilarity, heartache, and wisdom. In this event, Dr. Radis shares some of his stories and answers audience questions. After graduating from Bates College in 1976 with a degree in biology, Dr. Radis committed to a career in osteopathic medicine after meeting a D.O. family practice bush pilot in Baja, Mexico. After completing his internal medicine residency, the young doctor moved his family to Peaks Island off the coast of Maine and provided primary care to four year-round islands in Casco Bay. In addition to his clinic duties on Peaks and Chebeague Islands, he traveled year-round by boat to the outer islands and logged more than 100 yearly house calls. For more than three decades, he has lived on Peaks Island with his wife, Sandi Korpela Radis, commuting year-round on his boat to the mainland. His public health work continues on the island, where he assisted in the design of a new health center, lobbied for senior housing, and is active in developing an assisted living facility. He has been a member of the Peaks Island Health Center Board of Directors for more than 30 years. He is the author of two books about his life and work as an island doctor: Go by Boat and Island Medicine.
