The western coast of Scotland lay at the end of the warm gulf stream current, which carries not just nutrients but also potentially microplastics that may threaten filter feeders such as basking sharks that aggregate during the summer to feed along these coasts. In a global project led by Prof. Claire Gwinnett and Laura Wilkinson to map the extent of microplastics pollution here in Scotland, this 2025 expedition joins the team at Basking Shark Scotland led by Shane Wasik and biologists Ben Sheil and Evan Johnston, to understand the impacts not just to sharks but also other marine life that depend on these plankton rich seas, in some of the most remote corners of the northern atlantic.
