How and when is it worth to enhance the Stage-Gate process with the Design Thinking, Lean Startup, and Agile methodologies? Stage-Gate process has been at the core of new product development for decades: it has helped organizations to align resources, phase investments, and identify serious issues early. When well executed, Stage-Gate has proved to enhance the quality and timeliness of new product deliver. Nevertheless, it has been challenged to adapt to a digital age with faster cycle times. The fast-changing business world requires managers to think of flexible ways of product development that ensure responsiveness to customer needs. To do so, firms are trying to integrate Design Thinking, Lean Startup, and Agile into the Stage-Gate, by creating hybrid models. However, it is not clear how firms can implement these hybrid models, and which new projects deserve extra methodological competencies than the one provided by the Stage-Gate in isolation. These issues call for advanced tools such as the newly developed Hybrid Model Matrix, a framework that supports mangers’ decision-making regarding which NPD process to activate for a specific project and that can be used to integrate emerging methodologies of innovation with established practices. If you are curious about how our tool can help your organization to enhance the Stage-Gate, you might want to take a look at the paper I co-authored with Clio Dosi and Matteo Vignoli and published in Research-Technology Management #RTM (Innovation Research Interchange - IRI IRI’s article in Volume 64, Issue 5 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/1.... Thanks to all the company’s managers who contributed to the study, to Professor Lorenzo Massa for the meaningful conversations we had on the research topics, to service designer Alice Donferri Mitelli for her graphical support, and to Enago for the video that summarizes the paper. #NewProductDevelopment #HybridModels #StageGate #DesignThinking #LeanStartup #Agile #HybridModelMatrix #HMM
