15(33)/18: Suite No. 11 – “Ji (Hybridized Version)”; Symphony No. 32 in G-flat major, Op. 283, No. 2: XV. Saltarello feroce: “The Bacchanalia”, GSO 495 Another track which I had planned for since before the album's full conception, what was originally a Notturna (Nocturne) is my dedication to the nightlife. Living in Las Vegas (and having such a lifestyle withheld from me for all of my late adolescence), I have taken to clubbing and raving in my early- and mid-twenties. This has resulted in a vibrant social life that has come with merits and challenges. This piece, written for the purpose of being adapted into a dubstep (technically drumstep) song, is meant to express the loud and fervid world I have delved into (not to mention that the vast majority of raves I have gone to have been for bass music). Originally, this song was also called "Streetlights," after the literal lights which illuminated my nights out. However, it didn't seem impactful enough. So, I eventually settled on "Bacchanalia," to represent the wanton energies put forth in clubs, raves, and house parties. I also chose to refer to this movement as a saltarello: the closest Old-World dance I could find which can exemplify the fast-paced tone of bass music. It's obviously not a 1:1 comparison, but most of these movements aren't, anyway! Oh! The reason why this visualizer is black is because this particular version of "The Bacchanalia" will be a part of the upcoming Hybridized Version of this album, which I'll be releasing later this year. The purely orchestral equivalent wasn't my main focus, so I wanted to tease that second version here instead. 自 (Ji) is the thirty-second album I've created and the first in Phase VII. It is a themed album built in the same style as 7: The Vices and Virtues Suite, wherein the entire album consists of one long suite of movements. In this case, Ji explores me as an individual: a self-defining and autobiographical album detailing various aspects of the composer as a person. The album’s name and Japanese character used allude to a comedic alter-ego I developed while in high school: Ji-san (自さん), literally meaning “Mister Myself.” Ji-san, a cartoon doodle of me, embodied the character which I posed while in high school to my friends and colleagues—that which is defined through the movements of this suite. Then, when the concept of this album was first made, it was named Me, because I wished for it to serve as a musical autobiography of sorts. At the beginning of 2021, I combined the two concepts to form this album’s current version: Ji. And now, in 2024, I finally get around to making it truly real.
