In this video, I run a simple test to show the effects of adding grids to your light. Watch as I demonstrate the impact of using a single grid versus stacking grids to refine light spill using the Reflector XL Line from @MagnetMod Chapters 0:00 - Video Intro 0:13 - Gear We Will Be Using 1:49 - Starting Without A Grid 2:52 - Results of No Grid 3:04 - Adding 40 Degree Grid 3:42 - Results of 40 Degree Grid 4:12 - Swapping to 20 Degree Grid 4:29 - Results of 20 Degree Grid 4:50 - Stacking Grids 5:16 - Results of Stacking Grids 5:34 - All Results Side-by-Side 5:58 - Thanks for Watching! When it comes to stacking Grids, here are a few things that are happening: Further Beam Restriction – If you were to stack two 20-Degree grids, the combined effect of course will be more restrictive than a single grid alone, but it won’t necessarily be as tight as simply doubling the 20-degree effect. Increased Light Loss – More light is absorbed or scattered within the stacked grids, meaning less light reaches your subject. Which is why increasing the power is necessary in order to maintain a similar exposure. Potential Softening – Depending on grid material and depth, some diffusion might occur, reducing contrast slightly. This will vary based on the type of modifier that you are using of course. If you need a significantly tighter beam, using a 10-degree grid instead of stacking two 20-degree grids would certainly be a more efficient option, as it avoids unnecessary light loss while achieving a more focused beam.
