Halima Asena was among the first youths in Eastern Uganda to promote the People Power movement, which later evolved into the National Unity Platform (NUP), now the leading opposition party in Uganda following the 2021 general elections. Although Halima expressed interest in contesting in the 2021 elections, she was not nominated. She, however, held discussions with Nanduga Robinnah, the NUP candidate who ran for the Mbale City Woman MP seat and came third in the race. Robinnah is not returning to the race in the upcoming elections. Halima, a former Speaker of the Eastern Youth Parliament and the current regional coordinator, is optimistic that her early efforts in mobilizing support for NUP in the region, coupled with her leadership track record, will earn her the party’s endorsement to contest for the Mbale City Woman Member of Parliament seat.
