Perineal Tear Vs Episiotomy (Trigger Warning)

Happy New Year!! In this video, I talk about #vaginaltearing and my episiotomy! I have 2 experiences of my own. Trigger warning! My traumatic birth experience does not reflect all hospitals Medicine.net Episiotomy: A surgical procedure for widening the outlet of the birth canal to facilitate delivery of the baby and to avoid a jagged rip of the area between the anus and the vulva (perineum). *Remember, your experience might be different than mine. It should be normal to feel pressure with an epidural, but not sharp pains. I don’t believe that my epidural was working properly.* With that episiotomy and scar tissue, I thought for sure I would end up with a gnarly tear and would end up in the emergency room with my whole family freaking out, getting stitched up. I wanted to do all of the things that I’ve heard of to prevent, but ended up not doing those things...for more reason than one! I had every intention of giving birth in my kitchen and being in full squat, but that’s not how my second birth went down. Gravity could have been my friend, but I was right back laying down with my feet up! It was what felt comfortable and right. As soon as I felt the ring of Fire I said “I have to get on my back!” My baby was born in 3-5 mins. Not too shabby! My midwife said that I had a small amount of bruising and a minor tear. The recovery from both was SO different! This isn’t just because it was two different babies and births, but also because of the tear vs episiotomy. I’ll share the difference between the two and how they each felt, recovery wise: EPISIOTOMY 1.) Right away, I could feel the stitches. I had an epidural and was numb but I think only partially numb, as I still felt almost everything. The pulling, pressure, and needle itself going in. Being cut open was also..whew! Quick, but burned and felt sharp. 2.) Peeing was scary so don’t get me started on pooping! I honestly think it’s scary no matter if you tear or not, but can’t speak for everyone! My first pee...omg. I cried! My stitches burned (I had 22 for crying out loud). Warm water from the peri bottle burned...I learned how to position myself on the toilet just the right way, when using the bathroom. It was awkward! 3.) A donut pillow saved my life! If you don’t know what that is...it looks like a nursing pillow, but it’s small! Some people use them to relax on planes. My grandpa luckily had one for his bum, that he let me borrow. My family is weird and close haha. 4.) Going in public essentials: pillow, peri bottle, dermaplast spray I knew nothing about sitz baths, herbs, or anything during this time and I wish I had. The pain from my episiotomy was more painful than after birth contractions and mostly continued to feel sharp and stabbing, which lessened as it healed. NATURAL TEAR/ 1st DEGREE: Again, I was on my back with my second child and this wasn’t planned. I get some comments like: “why are you on your back, let gravity help you!” I know what a shame, but this is what my body told me to do so I did it and I don’t regret it! 1.) My minor tear was NOTHING like my episiotomy recovery. My vagina just felt a little sore after birth. Have you ever accidentally got kneed in the vagina? No sharp stabbing pain for weeks. 2.) It burned some when I used the bathroom, pooping was harder than peeing, but I was less afraid because I knew what to expect and there wasn’t too much healing as opposed to my first birth that needed to be done! Peri bottle, dermaplast spray, earth angel spray, and sitz bath were all my friends...but I really only needed this help for about 2 weeks. 3.) I used my donut pillow the very first week, unlike with my first, I used it for weeks with my episiotomy! 4.) With my second child, I did a bit of sitting in. I wanted to do this because it was flu season and no matter the time of year, I believe in sitting in if you can and if possible! Of course, this could be difficult for some. Basically, I just didn’t leave the house with my baby for about a month. I went outdoors, I went next door, but I didn’t take long car trips or go to grocery stores. Again, I only needed the essentials for a short time with my second baby. Going out wasn’t a fuss with my healing vagina ha. So, what is a vaginal tear? It’s when the space between your vulva or vaginal opening and your anus tears. This can happen during childbirth. There are different kinds of vaginal tears: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th degree. In my next video, I’ll go more in depth with different tears, what is suggested to prevent, and healing aids.
