A little more testing of a 12mm carbide bit, Wood is 1: Willow, semi-dry. 2: Laburnum,dry. 3: Pine with twig and crack,dry. The carbide bit has been used to hollow out 5 small things before this little test here, so its almost new. It looks like it eats what it's served, it's a little chattering, but no wonder when it has such a steep angle on the cutting edge. The finish is not as good as with a hook or ring tool, but it is not expected. It is, after all, a cheap carbide with a steep angle. But anyway, I'm impressed with what this carbide swallows endgrain wood. Yes, this will probably be a permanent fixture in my toolbox for hollowing. It is best to mount the carbide bit directly on a steel bar, (14-16mm) instead of the kind of insert I have in the video.
