Many engine oil's will turn black in the first few hours of operation due to contaminants generated by the combustion process. Often people believe that if their engine oil goes black quickly the oil is no good and need to be changed. Often this is not the case as the oil will discolour as it tries to keep the inside of the engine clean and carry the combustion contaminates to the oil filter. The engine combustion process produces soot and other by-products that are forced past the piston and piston rings as blow-by. This allowing the combustion contaminates to directly contaminate the engine oil, resulting in the oil having a dark, almost black colour While heat cycles cause oil to darken, soot and carbon causes engine oil to turn black. If these particles are not carried to the oil filter by the engine oil they will produce large deposits inside the engine resulting in blockages and restrictions within the oiling system.
