Welcome to my @dutchaperture channel! Today I want to do a mini-review of the Olympus 75-300 mm 4.8-6.7 Mark II lens and show you two use cases. The first one is an airshow, the second about birds I shot whilst sitting on a balcony I bought this lens when my children wanted to attend the RIAT airshow in 2015 in the UK, and I thought this was a brilliant opportunity to satisfy my Gear Acquisition Syndrome with a long tele lens. At that time I had two systems: one centered around my Nikon D750 full-frame camera, and one around my Olympus OMD-EM 10 mark 1 Micro Four-thirds camera. I quickly settled on buying the telelens for my Micro Four-thirds camera. First of all, because Long Nikon Full Frame telelenses were extremely expensive, and secondly because I wanted to travel light. I quickly settled on the Olympus 75-300 mm lens because of its price and weight. At the time I bought it in 2015 it cost somewhere around USD 400, and I think it can now be bought between USD 450 and USD 550. The lens did not come with a Lens Hood, but I bought an aftermarket one from JJC for around USD 20. So how did the lens perform at the airshow? In one word: fantastic! Despite the fact that most planes on the airshow were mostly fighter jets traveling at high speed, the lens-camera combination very quickly nailed the object. I also really liked the quality. The lens-camera combination also was so light that, contrary to other photographers around me, I did not need any tri or mono-pods. The second use case was during my holidays in Scotland. Because my wife wanted to look for seals and dolphins I took the lens with me. Unfortunately, we did not see neither. However, on our balcony, we had a bird feeder. The feeder was approximately 3.5 meters away from where I was seated, and I decided to try to capture them with this lens. Again I am very satisfied with the results. So do I like the lens and would I recommend it? The answer is yes. If you are in the market for a micro-four thirds tele lens and do not want to spend a small fortune on the professional Olympus lens line-up, e.g. the Olympus ED 300mm f/4 IS which costs around USD 2.500-3.000 or the mighty OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 150-400MM F4, which costs around USD 7.500. On the other hand, if you are a Panasonic micro-four thirds user, you might want to check out the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm F4.0-5.6 II. Although with a shorter zoom range, 100 instead of 75, the advantage for Panasonic users is that it is a stabilized lens, and costs around the same as the Olympius 75-300. I hope you found this review helpful. Please feel feel to like this video and subscribe to my channel. Happy shooting!
