This is Scottish Power Pipe Band under the direction of Pipe Major Christopher Armstrong with Leading Drummer Jake Jørgensen playing at the UK Pipe Band Championships in Belfast. The band is playing a new medley comprising the following tunes: My Dream Valley on the Road to Glendaruel Slainte Do Mhabu The Boys of the Town Lament for Mary MacLeod Duncan Lamont The Guards Club Recital Series Hanter Dro Golden Brown This medley starts with a 3/4 march, John MacLellan's beautifully constructed My Dream Valley on the Road to Glendaruel. It brought back memories of 2010 and 2011 when the band very effectively used Castle Dangerous, also a 3/4 march, as a medley starter. The concept of a 3/4 march may seem contradictory to some. Marches are usually in 4/4 or some variant, with the strong beat always with the marcher's left foot (or right for some). However, they are common enough in pipe band music, and, indeed, may be unique to the genre. These march tunes (often referred to as retreat marches) tend to be melodious, gentle rather than militaristic, nostalgic but proud. I love them! And there is something hypnotically satisfying about marching along with the strong beat alternating between the left and right foot. Scottish Power was placed fourth in the Grade One Championship competition.
