Turkeys in Maryland were once abundant. By the early 1900’s they were nearly extirpated, meaning extinct in the state. The restoration of the wild turkey is one of the greatest conservation success stories of all-time. Bob Long, the Wild Turkey and Upland Game Bird Biologist for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, will summarize the dramatic comeback of the species and also discuss the biology and current management of these fascinating birds. Bio: Bob received a Bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech and a Master's degree from West Virginia University, both in Wildlife Management. He has worked for DNR for 19 years and focuses his efforts on monitoring populations and establishing habitat for bobwhite quail, wild turkeys, and ruffed grouse. He resides in Hurlock, Maryland and enjoys fishing, hunting, and all things outdoors.
