A cigarette that bears a lipstick's traces/An airline ticket to romantic places In 1934, a BBC radio producer awoke on a Sunday morning in urgent need of a new song for a revue going out that evening. Fuelled by 'vodka and coffee', he bashed out a 'laundry list' lyric These Foolish Things is often included in the mythical American songbook but was written by the British 'Mayfair' partnership of lyricist Eric Maschwitz (writing under the improbable pseudonym Holt Marvell) and composer Jack Strachey.
