August Kiel (1813-1871) Concerto for French horn and Orchestra in F minor, Op. 23 I. Allegro appassionato 0:00 II. Larghetto con moto 4:50 III. Rondo: Allegretto 9:59 Michael Hölzl, French horn Philharmonia Hungarica Gilbert Varga, conductor Clemens August Kiel (1813 - 1871) was a German composer, conductor and violinist. Kiel's father was a singing teacher and later inspector of the court theater in Sondershausen. In 1831 Louis Spohr in Kassel accepted Kiel as a violin and composition student. In 1832 Kiel became a member of the Hautboisten-Corps at the Fürstlich Lippischen Hof Detmold and in 1836 provisional, 1837 full-time conductor of the now civil ensemble (officially “Fürstlich-Lippische Hofkapelle” after 1849). In 1845 he took over as director of the Court Orchestra at the Residenz. Under the direction of Kiel, the Detmold Court Chapel was significantly expanded, particularly with regard to the string ensemble. Kiel's relationship with Johannes Brahms, who was temporarily in Detmold from 1857 to 1859, is considered tense because he himself sought to direct the Detmold court concerts. In 1862, after a dispute with a garrison officer under the influence of alcohol, Kiel was released without notice and only received a grace salary . His successor was Carl Bargheer . In 1866 Kiel performed for the last time as a violinist. Kiel left several symphonies, concertos, including a horn concerto and a flute concerto, chamber music works, choirs, songs, marches and waltzes.
