Yesterday I put up The Premiers 45 "Little Ways" and its killer instrumental B-Side, "Get Your Baby." The track was originally written and recorded by Mark and the Escorts on GNP Crescendo - a very cool record that I've yet to lay my hands on. And today's NY Night Train Party Platter is the third version of "Get Your Baby". Along with NYNT favorites Thee Midniters, Cannibal and the Headhunters, Little Ray, et al, The Blendells are kings of the supreme East Los Angeles brown eyed rock and soul sound of the mid-1960s. The young band's first trip to the studio in 1964 yielded a huge national hit with a storming latin-tinged version of Stevie Wonder's "La La La La La". And apparently they hit gold on the very first take! Hot on the heels of their an instant classic, The Blendells returned to the studio to do their own take on "Get Your Baby". While this version is hands-down the smoothest and most produced of the three, it's also the fastest and most dynamic of the bunch. And while a clubby sax part is risky for a style of music best left in the raw, this one really cooks and reminds me so much of the swinging sax instrumental part in the middle Love's "Stephanie Knows Who" (recorded in Los Angles a year later). The Blendells broke up not long after this single and four of the members were drafted and went off to Vietnam and since have put on rare live reunion shows from time to time. if you ever want biographical material, photos, flyers, discography, sound clips, and other info on the wild and wonderful world of the East Side Sound, look no further than Mark Guerrero of Mark and the Escorts' web site and You Found That Eastside Sound. These two Blendells bios are an excellent place to start your journey: http://www.markguerrero.com/12.php http://wwwyoufoundthateastsidesoundco... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ble... graphics by AVI SPIVAK (http://www.avispivak.com)! You're listening to my daily addition to the New York Night Train Party Platter playlist. Each track here is recorded directly from the original 45 (no bootlegs, reproductions, etc) to give you an idea of what the real deal authentic vinyl sounds like. COME BACK EVERY DAY FOR A NEW FIX! Because the records pass so quickly at my dance parties, this channel is an attempt to stop and focus on one record at a time in hopes that it'll turn you on to the artists, tracks, labels, etc. I'm just hipping myself to a lot of these records for the first time as well - so you can view this as a journey to learning more about cool old records together! But mostly I hope this music moves you as much as it moves me.
