In Marcus Aurelius (121–180 AD), two seemingly opposing worlds converge: that of imperial power and that of inner virtue. As Roman Emperor, he guided the empire through some of its darkest chapters—wars on the frontiers, floods, famine, plague, and civil strife. His public life demanded strength, resolve, and sacrifice. Yet behind the marble image of the ruler was a man engaged in a quiet, lifelong conversation with himself. Marcus was given the nickname Verissimus—“the most truthful one.” He was not only a sovereign, but a philosopher deeply shaped by Stoicism. Not the cold detachment we often associate with the word today, but a living philosophy rooted in reason, compassion, and the belief that all human beings are citizens of one world. To Marcus, justice was the highest good, and the cultivation of one’s character the greatest task. Verissimus is a musical exploration of this duality: the tension between the burdens of command (reflected in a Respighian March) and the quiet discipline of philosophical thought (reflected through solemn hymn). It reflects both the harsh realities of conflict and loss, and the still strength found in reflection and moral clarity. It is a tribute to a man who, in the shadow of power, sought the light of wisdom.
