A playthrough of Konami's 1996 graphic adventure for the Sega Saturn, Policenauts. This is the first half of my two-part playthrough, and it covers the prologue and Act I. Many thanks to the guys over at Policenauts.net that put so much work into the fan translation of the game. I really enjoyed the work! Though I've already recorded the PlayStation version, the Saturn version really deserves its own coverage: shipping on three CDs, it is the "definitive" version of the game, featuring several upgrades over the PlayStation, 3DO, and PC98 versions. The FMV has been redone - the Saturn version's videos run at 24fps (15fps on PS1), and many of the videos have been altered and enhanced here. Notice how much more they cover the mechs this time, and how smoothly animated their CGI is? There are a number of new scenes, dialogue trees, and character portraits here, which all help the game's continuity and pacing, and some I'm sure will appreciate the lack of Sony's censorship in certain instances. I found the boob grabbing to be completely in poor taste, but I've included those scenes here for the sake of completion. The Saturn version also includes some special documentary-style bonus videos - I've included those as bonuses at the end of part 2. Overall, between the heavy story, the really nicely done graphics with full animated scenes punctuating the action, the massive amount of well-done voice over recordings, and a story line that doesn't let up on the dramatics until the very end, Policenauts is easily as good of a game as Snatcher is. I honestly don't think I could decide whether Snatcher or Policenauts is the better game, but when they're both as great as they are, why do you need to choose? Hideo Kojima knew what he was doing here, just like always.
