Coming up. A crazy rock story…Code words and mystery lyrics, a decades-long feud with a rival band, sweet stolen dance moves, the parting of the Red Sea, and oh yeah, the most controversial fish in all of music video history. And somehow all of this is connected to this one Amazing song. EPIC by Faith No More. This song is so legendary in fact, that it’s even in the name., we’ll get into this song’s riddle-like lyrics. They refer to the word “IT” throughout the song. SO WHAT, or WHO IS IT? Let’s find out. The song came right after they fired their singer… Chuck Mosely a new singer came right in and wrote the lyrics to this band’s killer riff. Mike Patton Killed it with EPIC’s lyrics. They knew it was a hit but the record label didn’t care… they chose the band’s first single and when it flopped they told this group they could pick the next single…it not only ignited this band’s fortunes, some argue it invented a new genre Rap Metal but so many styles we’re represented here they had everything in this song… even the kitchen sink…the story is NEXT on the Professor of Rock. It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightning where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day. Here we honor artists and bands and that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some ‘one hit wonders’, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle… And for today’s track, “What is it?” It’s Epic by Faith No More. Calling this one a bottled lightning entry might be a little controversial. Because this band goes well beyond hit songs…But here in the States, Epic was their only mainstream hit. So let’s get into the story. At the turn of the 80s, a group of musicians going by the name “Sharp Young Men”, then “Faith. No Man” got their start in California. These guys were among the first bands to experiment with a fusion of funk, thrash, and hardcore styles. The band included drummer Mike Bordin, bassist Billy Gould, vocalist Mike “The Man” Morris, and keyboardist Wade Worthington. Shortly after Worthington was replaced by keyboardist Roddy Bottum, and Mike Morris was booted from the crew. And then they started going by Faith No More. After going through a series of singers including Courtney Love, (yes that Courtney Love), the guys enlisted frontman Chuck Mosely in 1983. That same year, the revolving lineup continued to spin as Jim Martin replaced Mark Bowen on guitar. In 1984, the band recorded a four-song demo tape, which led to the band's first real album, "We Care A Lot," released on Mordam Records in 1985. Within a year the band signed up with Slash Records, who was distributed by Warner Brothers. Then in 1987, Faith No More released their second album, ‘Introduce Yourself’.
