Dr. Michael McCamish: The Creative Path of Life and Its Many Teachers

Join your hostess, Mariquita Solis, the Uncaged Heart Coach as she welcomes Dr. Michael McCamish. Michael lives in Chattanooga and returned there in 2011 from California where he lived for 14 years. He has had the honor since 2012 to learn with students as the professor of Anthropology and Criminal Justice at Chattanooga State. Michael's “real world” and educational experiences have informed each other over his years in both Tennessee and California to create his anthro-po-logical perspective. His experiences include having worked in a chicken factory and as a social worker with homeless and juvenile populations, taught in prisons to study prison culture, and trained as an actor to become a performing artist. He did this while studying Psychology (Bachelors), Criminal Justice (Master’s degree), and Anthropology (Ph.D.) to now work as a professor at Chattanooga State. As a Professor, he strives for each of his classrooms to have a balanced combination of textbook, quizzes-assessment, reflection, group work, and experiential “Challenges” activities to facilitate a learning process that is dynamic with a variety of avenues of learning. Michael currently lives in a log cabin on the back of Signal Mountain. He has two incredible daughters that he shares in custody with their mother. Thus, he is a single father every other week and enjoys the challenges that come with it. His daughters will always be the most important ingredient in his life, but also important are his hobbies of building and performing puppets and disappearing into his film darkroom , developing film and pictures.
