Lay Legal Webinar: African Americans and The Criminal Justice System

Communities of color are disproportionately impacted by sexual and domestic violence, yet are often reluctant to disclose victimization to law enforcement, engage with the criminal justice system, or access mainstream services due to historical trauma and ongoing systemic discrimination. In order to appropriately meet the needs of survivors of color, we must address the racial inequities survivors currently face. This webinar will provide an overview of sexual and domestic violence against African Americans, examine the evolution of African American cultural identity, and provide insight on specific challenges African American survivors face within the criminal justice system. Participants will learn strategies for aiding and assisting African American survivors as they navigate the criminal justice system in pursuit of safety and security.
