Have you ever wondered how to make wheat starch paste? Join me as the thirty minute process is reduced to a 1.5 minute timelapse! Wheat starch paste is the bread and butter of paper conservation and a paper conservator. We use wheat starch paste for tear repairs, infills, linings and sometimes as a poultice. Each week we go through the soothing ritual of making paste in the conservation laboratory. The careful, thirty minute preparation and stirring is comforting in it's rhythms, time needed and movements. Making wheat starch paste is a very personal thing. Each conservator does it slightly differently. Should you make wheat starch paste on the stove or should you make wheat starch paste in the microwave? What ratio of powder to water do you use for your paste - 1:3 or 1:4? How long do you soak wheat starch paste for? How long do you cook it for? Each conservator prefers their own process based on who they learned from, their experience and how they will use the paste. Join me as I make mine (really quickly)! || Resources || Need a conservator? Every country has private conservators that can treat your treasures. In Australia we have the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material. Most countries have an equivalent.
