BODRUM ANCIENT THEATER

The Halicarnassus Theater, built on the southern slope of Goktapa Hill on soft bedrock, is 50 meters above sea level. It faces the ancient city, the Aegean Sea, and Kos Island. The theater, built in the middle or late 4th century BC, is one of the oldest and most authentic examples of ancient theaters. Built on a hillside, having a horse-shoe form and its seating area separating from the stage building, Halicarnassus Theatre has all the early theater features. The Halicarnassus Theater is similar to the Epidavros Theater, Greece's most impressive and acoustically perfect theater. Professor Serdaroğlu, who carried out excavations and restorations in the ancient theater, stated that the Halicarnassus theater was older than the Priene theater and dated it to the Mausollos Period. The Danish Group, excavating in Bodrum for many years, suggested a later date for the theater. According to the ancient writers, at the end of the fourth century BC, Halicarnassians dedicated a statue for a Halicarnassian tragedy writer on the Athenian Acropolis. After satrap Mausollos, Queen Artemisia organized a drama contest in Halicarnassus, and a tragedy play named Mausollos won a prize. Besides, a Halicarnassian tragedy actor, who tried to arrange a marriage between Alexander the Great and Ada the Younger, the nephew of Mausollos, is also mentioned. Many tragedy writers and actors indicate that Halicarnassus had a busy theater environment since the 4th century BC.    / @mehmetcuhadar
