NEW YORK CITY TODAY: A Walk around the First Skyscraper. The Woolworth Building on Broadway
The Woolworth Building is an early American skyscraper also known as the First Skyscraper, located at 233 Broadway in Manhattan across City Hall and Brooklyn Bridge. Designed by architect Cass Gilbert in Neo-Gothic Style, it was the tallest building in the world from 1913 to 1930, with a height of 792 feet (240m). The building was cladded entirely with decorative terracotta to mimic the heavy gothic stone appearance. Nowadays the terracotta is falling apart after 120 years and the building is constantly in repairs. Since it is an NYC Landmark building it can not be changed and needs to be maintained in its original condition. The Woolworth Building was seen in the Disney movie Enchanted (2007) and others.
