NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - Recorded in January 1966 at Hollywood's Gold Star Recording Studios, this demo acetate contains an unfinished alternate recording of what would ultimately be the debut single by The ASHES on the Vault label. Written by Jackie DeShannon and Nick De Caro, on this version of 'Is There Anything I Can Do', lead vocals are by group member, Barbara Robison with John Merrill on harmony singing over the basic rhythm track. The finished recording would become a marvelous, jingle-jangly, 'Wall of Sound' production with the addition of the usual Spector musical embellishments of shaking maracas and tambourine above the rumbling drum fills and intoxicating echo. Although this backing track was performed by the ASHES (band line-up consisted of: Barbara 'Sandi' Robison - vocals, John Merrill - guitar/ vocals, Alan Brackett - bass/ vocals, Spencer Dryden - drums, and Jim Cherniss - guitar/ vocals), additional instrumentation supplied by members of the WRECKING CREW was included in the final released mix. (Thanks to Challengers band member, RANDY NAUERT, for sharing his color photo of Richard Delvy shown in this video).
