He framed the verdict as one he will contest through the courts and signalled that legal avenues remain open to him and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leadership. Throughout the briefing Malema positioned the conviction within a broader political narrative, emphasising that the matter will be fought both legally and politically. He used the platform to reassure supporters that the EFF will remain active and that the party views the legal outcome as contestable rather than final. The conviction stems from an incident in Mdantsane in 2018 where Malema was found guilty under the Firearms Control Act for firing a weapon in public. Earlier reporting has documented the court’s finding and Malema’s stated intention to pursue an appeal, which he reiterated during the press conference. Expect the EFF to pursue formal appeal filings and to continue using public statements to shape perceptions of the case. The party’s communications will likely combine legal updates with political mobilisation aimed at maintaining supporter engagement while the appeal process unfolds.
