It's Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! On this episode of Teal Talk, we are joined by bilingual advocates, Monicah Yonghang and Leela Karki of Asian Services in Action, for a discusson on the diversity of experiences and needs within AAPI communities as well as the various cultural barriers that may prevent AAPI survivors from reporting sexual violence and accessing services. Monicah and Leela would like to highlight AAPI leaders from their agency, including CEO Elaine Tso (half Chinese & half Filipino); COO Mao Vue (Hmong); CFO Chandra Ghalley (Nepali-speaking community); and CPO Susan Wong (Chinese). ASIA also has allies outside of AAPI who work to empower AAPI sexual violence survivors, including Samantha Salamon, Manager of Ahimsa & Legal Departments, and Amanda Smith, Advocate Supervisor. ASIA is hosting an upcoming virtual training for those who work with immigrant and refugee survivors on May 26th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Email [email protected] to register. People who want to learn more about helping sexual assault survivors from AAPI communities can join their Immigrant and Refugee Ohio Coalition to End Sexual Violence (IROC) on the first Thursday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. To join, contact Amanda Smith at [email protected] or Leela Karki at [email protected].
