What are critical and semi critical surgical instruments? Critical surgical instruments are those that come into direct contact with a patient's bloodstream or tissues that are normally sterile, such as during an invasive procedure. Examples of critical instruments include heart-lung bypass circuits, dialysis equipment, and surgical instruments used in open-heart surgery. Semi-critical surgical instruments are those that come into contact with mucous membranes or non-intact skin, but not with normally sterile tissue. Examples of semi-critical instruments include laryngeal masks, endoscopes, and respiratory therapy equipment. The distinction between critical and semi-critical instruments is important because it determines the level of disinfection that is necessary to minimize the risk of transmitting infections to the patient. High-level disinfectants, such as glutaraldehyde, are typically required for the disinfection of critical instruments, while lower-level disinfectants, such as hydrogen peroxide, may be sufficient for the disinfection of semi-critical instruments.
