1. Write songs of praise from your heart. If God has been faithful to you and brought blessings into your life, then write a song to thank Him. Psalms 9:1-2 NLT For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Death of the Son.” 1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. 2 I will be filled with joy because of you. I will sing praises to your name, O Most High. Psalms 9:1-2 AMPC (To the Chief Musician; set for [possibly] soprano voices. A Psalm of David.) “I WILL praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will show forth (recount and tell aloud) all Your marvelous works and wonderful deeds! I will rejoice in You and be in high spirits; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High!” CTA: If you are not familiar with the phrase “ministering to the Lord,” put “yes” in the comments and we will send you a link to the teaching series we just completed on this topic. 2. Write songs about trusting in the Lord as your protection. Give Him thanks and praise for the times when He shielded you from harm. Psalms 28:7 AMPC “The Lord is my Strength and my [impenetrable] Shield; my heart trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my SONG will I praise Him.” Here the psalmist, David, is praising and thanking God for being his Strength and Shield. He is recognizing God’s help and it causes him to rejoice with a SONG. In another psalm, David praised the Lord for answering his prayer for deliverance. Psalms 40:1 AMPC To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. I WAITED patiently and expectantly for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. Psalms 40:3 AMPC And He has put a new SONG in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many shall see and fear (revere and worship) and put their trust and confident reliance in the Lord. Our worship songs will draw others into ministering to the Lord by singing the uplifting lyrics. It also ministers to His heart when worshipers put their trust in Him. 3. Believers are called to praise the Lord with singing and playing instruments. We can give the church new songs to sing that will minister to the Lord. Psalms 33:1 AMPC “REJOICE IN the Lord, O you [uncompromisingly] righteous [you upright in right standing with God]; for praise is becoming and appropriate for those who are upright [in heart].” Psalms 33:2-3 “Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; sing praises to Him with the harp of ten strings. Sing to Him a NEW SONG; play skillfully [on the strings] with a loud and joyful sound.” 4. Our songs that praise the Lord from a grateful heart will show Who God is to the world. Believers and unbelievers need to hear that God is full of mercy and loving-kindness. Psalms 57:9-11 AMPC “I will praise and give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your mercy and loving-kindness are great, reaching to the heavens, and Your truth and faithfulness to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be over all the earth.” Psalms 63:3-4 AMPC “Because Your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. So will I bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.” Giving heartfelt praise and showing gratitude to God will radically transform our songwriting. We can be inspired by David’s psalms, but what God delights in is hearing your own story of trusting in Him and recognizing how He has helped you and protected you.
