How to Transplant a Tree & Fix Bare Spots in Your Lawn In this video, I show how I transplant a spruce tree and repair bare lawn patches in my compacted clay soil. I start by digging a wide hole—2 to 3 times the root ball width—to transplant a Picea pungens 'Jan Byczkowski' (Colorado Blue Spruce) to a new location. Then I plant a Columnar Blue Spruce in its place. After the tree swap, I show how to fix bare lawn patches using my custom topdressing mix, made with potting soil and soil amendments like Humichar by The Andersons. I use this mix to topdress and overseed the sidewalk strip with perennial ryegrass. This is my go-to method for repairing lawns in heavy clay soil and improving thin or patchy spots fast.
