‘Locals turned saviours’; How people of Balasore stepped up to save victims

On June 2, one of the worst train tragedies in India’s history shook the country. In a matter of minutes, three-train collision turned tracks in Odisha’s Balasore into a disaster zone. Amid cries for help by the passengers, locals were the first responders who rushed to the crash site. In the hour of need, people of Balasore displayed their humanitarian side by rescuing passengers. From providing medical assistance to queueing up for blood donation, people stepped up to save victims. Talking about the magnitude of devastation, a local said that victims were screaming in pain, and agony after accident. In the neighbouring district of Bhadrak, people queued up outside a hospital to donate blood. The courage and compassion of locals who reached the spot ` helped in minimising loss of lives.
