(1 May 1998) Spanish/Nat A former commander of Croatia's largest World War Two concentration camp faced his first court appearance Friday, amid international calls for speedy extradition. Dinko Sakic, 76, put up no resistance as he was led away in handcuffs on Thursday evening from his home in Santa Teresita, an Atlantic resort 200 miles (340 kilometres) southeast of Buenos Aires. Sakic, could be responsible for the death of as many as 600-thousand prisoners at Jasenovac, the largest concentration camp in Croatia. Argentina wants to distance itself from its reputation as a haven for war criminals by facilitating an immediate extradition to Croatia. Dinko Sakic, a former army captain who presided over the largest concentration camp in Croatia, was arrested on Thursday. Sakic, who arrived in Argentina in 1947, admitted in a recent television interview that he was the lead commander of the Jasenovac concentration camp. As is usual in Argentina, a neighbour was called to identify Sakic and to witness his arrest. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Q: How did you find him? A: He was fine, he was fine Q: What did he say? A: Nothing, nothing, he didn't say anything, he just said hello to me as a neighbour. SUPER CAPTION: State Witness Neighbours booed and jeered as police led Sakic away from his home to spend the night in the local police station in the Atlantic resort of Santa Teresita, 200 miles (320 kilometres) southeast of Buenos Aires. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Murderer, murderer! Jail the murderer. We don't want any Nazi murderers here. We all reject him- we reject him in this area- we don't want any Nazis living here." SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop Sakic was driven to a police station in the nearby town of Dolores on Friday where accusations were made against him. His lawyer, Miguel Rossi, would not comment on his client, other than to say that he was in good spirits. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Q: Did he (Sacik) make any kind of comment - how did he react to the accusations? A: I think this will all be explained once he arrives in Croatia. Q: Is he in well at the moment? A: Yes, he is. SUPER CAPTION: Miguel Rossi, Sacik's lawyer The majority of those killed in the camp which Sakic is said to have controlled were Serbs, as well as Jews and Croats who did not support the pro-Nazi Croat regime. Sakic has denied any wrongdoing, saying no one was exterminated at the camp when it was under his control. Both Yugoslavia and Croatia have already begun criminal proceedings and Argentinian authorities are pushing for his immediate extradition. Argentina and neighbouring Brazil have long has been regarded as a refuge for top Nazi and SS officers. President Carlos Menem, who wants to distance Argentina from its past reputation as a country opened to war criminals, ordered a full-scale search.
