Lukang (鹿港), formerly romanized as Lugang, is an urban township located in northwestern Changhua County (彰化縣), Taiwan. Situated on the west coast of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait, Lukang played a significant role as a crucial sea port during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was once the most populous city in central Taiwan until the early 20th century. The name "Lukang" translates to "Deer Port," a nod to its historical deerskin trade during the Dutch colonial period. The township is renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage, including more than 200 temples dedicated to various folk deities, making it a significant center for Taiwanese folk religion. Among these, the Longshan Temple and Matzu Temple stand out as key attractions. Lukang's historical significance is further highlighted by its preservation of old streets and architecture, which escaped modernization processes that affected other Taiwanese cities, thanks to its decline caused by the silting of its harbor and refusal to allow railroads through the city. Lukang's culinary scene is notable for traditional Taiwanese snacks and delicacies, such as the Yu Jen Jai cakes, Ox Tongue Cakes, and oyster pancakes. The township also gained recognition when it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan in March 2012.
