To understand the answer, you first have to understand the experience of what it means to be cast as the family scapegoat. Family scapegoating involves a specific kind of narcissistic abuse in dysfunctional family systems, by virtue of the singling out and targeting of one specific member of the family. The abuse includes, but is not limited to, harsh criticism, shaming, blame shifting, as well as the displacing of unresolved issues, pain, anger, and aggression. Issues, pain, anger, and aggression by the way, that have little, if anything at all, to do with the person being scapegoated within the family unit. In a narcissistic family, the family blames the scapegoat for their problems as a means of deflecting attention from real issues and conflicts that need to be addressed. As such, the scapegoat is chronically ridiculed, mocked, and punished even, for the shortcomings and mistakes of their abusers, as well as the very real relationship crimes being committed by other narcissistic family members. As a result, the abuse that a scapegoat endures often leaves them with serious mental and emotional challenges that can follow them around their entire lives, they become ready to do whatever it takes to heal, recover, and take much better care of themselves. And this, of course, raises the question, what would happen if the scapegoat were to sever ties and go no contact with their abusive family of origin? And that is what I cover in this video!
