History and heritage are two words that always complement each other. History is the study of the past, while heritage refers to valuable objects and qualities passed down from previous generations, such as historic buildings and traditions. Heritage is an elemental aspect for every city and its citizens. But how much do we really value and comprehend the significance of the past? Sandeep Godbole, a history buff and Vice President of cyber security systems at an international firm, answers all our baffling questions related to culture and history, which we generally fret about asking. In this talk, Sandeep introduces and explains what heritage and heritage walks actually mean. He methodically describes how a group of people, preferably a small one, can gather and embark upon a walk of discovery. Sandeep also mentions the importance of a walk’s guide, with qualities like patience and perfect knowledge of history. He demonstrates the importance of local history and its conservation by referring to the historical past of the city he loves the most: Pune. Sandeep then takes us on a virtual heritage walk in the old city of Pune. Through anecdotes of different historical places like Vinchurkar Wada, Mujumdar Wada, Nana Haud and Vishrambaug Wada, he implies the significance of the cultural roots to preserving the spirit of a city. Sandeep also gives examples of eminent citizens of Pune like Lokmanya Tilak, Kerunana Chhatre and Nana Fadnavis to pinpoint the kind of impact they had on the people, culture and heritage of this city. He stresses the need to conserve and preserve the same since they help complete a city and enhance its uniqueness. In the end, Sandeep parts with us by giving us a mantra to know our city better by being AWARE: Acceptance, Warmth, Acquaintance, Respect, Ethos. Sandeep conducts heritage walks in the old by-lanes of Pune, usually on weekends. He also maintains a blog where he regularly publishes articles on Pune’s historically unknown places. Sandeep Godbole, a cybersecurity expert and the Vice President for Atos Syntel documents old temples for truly understanding the history of Pune, and its people. Sandeep is also an active member of different societies like CSI - Computer Society of India and ISACA - Information Systems Audit and Control Association. Over the last few years, Sandeep has organized numerous Heritage Walks in Pune, in a pursuit to familiarize and enlighten participants of the history and various historical structures in the city. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
