(16 Apr 1996) Spanish/Nat French intellectual and well-known left-wing author Regis Debray has met Mexico's Zapatista rebel chief Commandante Marcos. Debray, who has written a number of books on revolution and is a former companion of legendary guerilla leader Che Guevara, met the rebel leader in Mexico's Lacandon jungle. Subcommandante Marcos, who led the uprising in Chiapas, is seen by many as the Che of today. Security is tight around this Zapatista encampment deep in the Chiapas jungle to protect yet another international public figure visiting the Zapatista leadership. French writer and intellectual Regis Debray travelled for eight hours on foot and on horseback from San Cristobal de las Casas to meet Subcommandante Marcos, the Zapatista leader. This is the first time Debray has visited a Latin American jungle since he took part in Che Guevara's disastrous guerrilla struggle in Bolivia 29 years ago. Debray wanted to find out for himself what the Zapatista uprising was all about through an interview with Marcos. The latest international visitor to the Zapatista camp joins a long guest list that includes movie director Oliver Stone, actor Edward James Olmos and many others. Debray said he was pleased to see what he called a fresh approach to armed struggle. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "It's very heartening and also a great pleasure to see that your movement is forging ahead, and it's going ahead not towards serious violence but towards a concept of a political struggle which, without negating the need for armed resistance, is leading towards dialogue." SUPER CAPTION: Regis Debray He alluded to his time spent with Che Guevara in Bolivia and held out hope that the Zapatistas' struggle would be more successful. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Thirty years ago when I was at a camp very similar to this one it was just as well-run, but this time I think the end result will be different." SUPER CAPTION: Regis Debray Marcos said visits by international celebrities to the camp helped to make the jungle life of the rebels a little easier. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The persecution of our ranks make it very difficult for them to work the land, and in one form or another, the arrival, the presence of these personalities go some way towards bringing peace to these communities and reduces the military presence." SUPER CAPTION: Commandante Marcos But he said there were serious problems on the way for the Zapatista movement. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We are expecting a very severe food shortage in the next few months right up until August. If we don't succeed in solving the situation we will have dozens of people will die." SUPER CAPTION: Commandante Marcos Although progress in resolving matters between the rebels and the Mexican government is slow, visits from such people as Regis Debray help to keep the Zapatista movement in the international spotlight.
