This year the California Department of Food and Agriculture releases the regulations governing the world’s first cannabis appellation of origin system for cannabis. State law mandates that cannabis farming communities will be able to stipulate region specific product standards, farming practices and cultivars as defining aspects of these collective intellectual property rights. These proposed regional standards are introduced through petitions, authored and submitted by farming groups, and if awarded an appellation designation, become codified as the governing production rules of farmers united under the appellation designation. Appellation of Origin product designations offer consumers a window into the culture, values and knowledge of farming regions. Appellation products are differentiated on the basis of authenticity and unique quality characteristics. These designations elevate not just the value of the product, but the value of the culture and the land that produced the appellation product. For the legacy cannabis farming regions of California that lobbied for appellations and helped to shape the development of this program over the past 3 years, the launch of the CalCannabis Appellations Program is a symbol of community resilience and the enduring values of the craft cannabis producing regions of California.
