This is a launch announcement for BS-i, the first Japanese digital satellite station, as originally transmitted on TBS Hi via the analog MUSE satellite transmission system in 2000 and recorded to JVC Victor's analog W-VHS HDTV tape recording system. Early Japanese Hi-Vision (HDTV) transmissions used an analog HDTV transmission system called MUSE. Only one MUSE channel was available via satellite, and this channel was timeshared between all the major Japanese TV stations. This was used for the first regular, public HDTV transmissions in the world starting in 1989. Eventually, the Japanese ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses) developed a digital replacement for the MUSE system, called ISDB, which could be used for satellite, cable, and terrestrial transmissions. As a highly efficient system, ISDB could transmit multiple digital HDTV channels in the bandwidth of a single MUSE channel, allowing each station to get their own channel for regular HDTV broadcasting. It also included features such as a program guide and interactive features to bridge the gap into the modern internet age. The announcement here is for the very first use of the ISDB system, the TBS-run satellite channel, BS-i, which was launched December 1st, 2000. Today, BS-i is still transmitting, although it has since been renamed BS-TBS. W-VHS was the predecessor to the D-VHS system, the latter of which saw a true worldwide (but still relatively limited) release. Unlike the digital D-VHS system, the W-VHS tape system stores true analog component HD video on a tape with a similar form-factor as VHS/S-VHS tapes. Released in 1994, these players were the earliest and only way for consumers to record the Japanese 1035i HD MUSE satellite transmissions for a number of years.
