Alternate Mounts for a Questar

This is a look at the Meade 883 and the Meade 884 mounts and their application in holding a Questar 3 ½ inch scope. Recently I acquired a Quantum 4, a close cousin to the Questar 3 ½ inch telescope. I tried several alternative mounting systems before I ultimately designed and made an entirely new mount. Some of my experiments involved the Meade 883 and Meade 884 mounts. These mounts were designed for the Meade ETX scopes, which are quite similar in form and function to the Questar. Could the Meade products be used with a Questar? Were they even suitable? Through my experiments I discovered that these mounts were not very suitable for the Quantum 4 without heavy modifications, but I could use them for the Questar with some simple adapters. These mounts are not a perfect fit with the Questar, but they are inexpensive and available. They could make a good option for a Questar owner with some modest shop skills.
