Living in Vancouver you might not know it is actually an amalgamation of three cities. Their distinctive cultures survive today. This video has some highlights of this history. In deciding on future development and density, perhaps we should respect this past. This video touches on where the terms East End, West End, East Side and West Side come from, why First Avenue starts where it does, why the streets do not align on 16th Avenue, Burrard, Nanaimo, etc, why the houses on Union Street are higher and lower than the street grade(levelled for horses hauling goods). Also explains that when the three cities were amalgamated City Hall was moved to near the Boundary at 12th and Cambie, Broadway was positioned at the edge of an old District Lot, the streets of the Hastings Township were named after mining districts, etc. Kumtuks is a video blog that shares knowledge and explores new narratives.
