Inside the box, you’ll find the BMV080 on a breakout board with a Qwiic connector, and the board is pre-installed in an enclosure with a glass cover over the sensor optics. Don’t touch the glass. In this demo, we’re going to connect the sensor to a SparkFun IoT RedBoard and load an example application using the Arduino IDE. Connect the sensor to the IoT RedBoard using a Qwiic cable and connect the IoT RedBoard to the PC with a USB-C cable. Open the Arduino IDE. Before starting, you need to install the ESP32 board package and the SparkFun BMV080 Arduino library. You’ll also need to request the BMV080 SDK from Bosch and copy files from that into the Arduino library. Complete details are available in the sensor hookup guide. Once the software is ready, navigate to the examples included with the sensor library, and open the Basic Readings example. Select the SparkFun RedBoard IoT and its port, then upload the sketch. If it fails and says the wrong boot mode is detected, start the upload again and while it’s compiling press and hold the boot button on the board then press the reset button, and continue to hold the boot button until it starts uploading. Open the serial monitor and you can see sensor readings, listed in micrograms per cubic meter. Thankfully, we don’t have many pollutants in the air here.
