Featuring Troop D, Trooper S. Morris (D-23) attempts to stop a stolen vehicle after it pinged a West Memphis LPR. The subject flees. Police Report: On 11-22-22, at 10:42 A.M., I responded to the area of East Broadway and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in West Memphis, where the West Memphis Police Department was out with a stolen vehicle that had been hitting on several license plate readers in town. As soon as I pulled up, I was notified by a West Memphis Police officer that the black Acura MDX that was currently passing our location was also stolen and had just hit on an LPR. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on East Broadway towards I-55 southbound. As soon as I turned around, I could hear and see the black Acura accelerate away from me at a high rate of speed. I immediately notified dispatch that I was attempting to catch up to a stolen vehicle and that I believed that they would run from me as soon as I got close enough to attempt a traffic stop. As I approached the Acura, the driver entered I-55 southbound at a high rate of speed and soon began traveling at speeds more than 100 M.P.H. with other vehicles present. As I got close enough to read the tag of the vehicle for my dispatch center (TN 2H00T2), the suspect began swerving back and forth and hitting his brakes. At that time, I saw a gap in traffic and decided to perform a PIT maneuver on the rear passenger side of the suspect vehicle with the driver in front of my patrol vehicle. Because the suspect hit the brakes, I was unable to successfully perform a PIT. I ended up in front of the suspect's vehicle and he attempted to pass me several times. I was able to perform a second PIT by using the right front of my patrol vehicle to contact the left rear of the suspect vehicle. This action caused the suspect vehicle to lose control and strike the center concrete wall, disabling it. I exited my patrol vehicle and held the driver at gunpoint. I began issuing commands, which he did not follow. I entered the suspect vehicle and attempted to pull the driver from the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. I drew my department-issued Taser X2 and told the suspect that I was about to taser him. I discharged my taser, striking the suspect in the right arm and on the right side of his torso. The suspect fell from the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident. I called for an ambulance to make the scene and check the suspect out. Crittenden EMS was dispatched and removed the probes from the suspect. No further medical treatment was needed. I was able to confirm that the vehicle was listed in NCIC as stolen by the Memphis Police Department. I was also able to identify the driver as Alontae Childs. During the inventory of the vehicle, I located a black bag in the driver's floorboard that contained a loaded syringe with an unknown substance inside. Inside the bag, there were also three glass pipes, commonly used for smoking methamphetamine. The vehicle was towed by Thomas Wrecker for safekeeping. Childs was transported to the Crittenden County Detention Center, where he was booked in. During the booking process, I located a $20 bill that was folded up very small. As I unfolded it, I located approximately one gram of suspected methamphetamine inside. Childs was then advised of his charges, court date, and time. The suspected methamphetamine, loaded syringe, three glass pipes, and my taser cartridge were all logged into evidence and will be stored at the Troop D headquarters in Forrest City. The suspected narcotics will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for identification.
