Bound for Perth WA, another three days away, class leader CSR001 & CF4410 pass through Bogan Gate in western NSW with SCT's express intermodal service. CSR001 was put on public display on 22nd of July 2011 at CRC-Ziyang manufacturing plant. So the first lot are now 14 years old. Just up the line, as the train approaches, was the site of the former locomotive turntable. It was used in the steam era to turn steam locomotives. The turntable was lifted and removed during the 1970's after steam was replaced by diesel locomotives. GrainCorp closed down the Bogan Gate grain handling facilities as part of their "reform" initiative in 2017. A reform that today, it still very unpopular with local farmers who have to truck their grain to a "major terminal" and thus adding additional transport costs to the harvested crop. Bogan Gate railway station opened on the 15th of December 1896 and closed on the 18th of November 1989 after the "Silver City Comet" passenger train service was terminated. The 621 metre long Grain Siding, across the main and running to the silos, is still in use and mainly used to store locomotives and ballast trains. The 553 metre Loop Line, in the foreground, seldom sees use due to the length of todays trains which use the 1,920 metre long Yarrabandai Loop, another 22kms down the line. However, it is often used as a locomotive run around for grain trains that come off the Tottenham NSW branch line. Across from the station building is the Bogan Gate Hotel, which was refurbished in 2022 and offers cold beer plus a lunch and dinner menu, it's popular with many locals and farmers. Specialised Container Transport (SCT) currently have 24 "CSR" class locomotives built by CRRC Ziyang in China and designated the SDA1 model. Powered by a German made MTU Friedrichshafen V20 turbo charged model 20V4000R43L prime mover delivering 4,220hp. Published track speed is 115KMh. The locomotives have the Wabtec "Fast Brake" system and a micro-computer control system. AC traction is controlled by IGBT convertors supplied by Zhuzhou CRRC Times Electric. The SDA1 complies with EU Stage-3, AAR and AUST UIC emission standards. CF4410 is on long term lease to SCT and is a General Electric C44aci model built by UGL at Newcastle NSW for Rail First Asset Management. UGL has built over 200 of these locomotives for a variety of operators outselling its competitor Progress Rail with the EMD GT46ACe model. Powered by a turbo charged four stroke GE 7FDL-16 EFI prime mover delivering a maximum gross horsepower of 4,500hp. The main alternator is a GE GMG192 powering six GE 5GEB30 traction motors. Maximum fuel capacity is 13,500 litres. Published track speed is 115KMh. Did you know? Bogan Gate was first settled around two kilometres to the north of its present location. The original settlement was around the Gunningbland Creek area where a small lagoon provided fresh water to the settlers. When the railway was established, the settlers moved to where the town exists today. Originally, the main west line was to have gone via Trundle but this was later changed to Bogan Gate. The "Selectors Arms Hotel" can still be seen today, derelict, near the Bogan Gate North passive level crossing. 1340hrs on Thursday 29th of August 2024.
