PPI in Action Webinar Series part 1: Co-Production for Research with Impact

Patient and public involvement (PPI) is a prerequisite for all research funded by NIHR. It can enhance the relevance and quality of research and help build trust in the research and its outcomes. The first webinar of the series is called “Co-production for Research With Impact” Our speakers are: Dr Megan Wyatt, Andy Woodhead, Dr Rosie Tope, Dr Andy Northcott, Dr Shadreck Mwale and Dr Katie Featherstone from The Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory, University of West London. For the last ten years our team within the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory have successfully used Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) and co-production as the foundation for an ongoing programme of high impact NIHR funded research, exploring the realities of hospital care for people living with dementia. We have been recognised and awarded for our approaches to inclusion and innovation in the co-production of this programme of research. Our current NIHR-funded study explores the use of restrictive practice and restraint as part of care, which are poorly understood but common practices during a hospital admission. In this webinar we will hear from those involved in this research, showing how we collaborate with people with a lived experience of dementia, and carers, outlining how co-production prioritised the agenda of this research and its development through to delivery. We describe and discuss: Our approach to building a long-term programme of outreach and engagement to shape our research. How we collaborate with people living with dementia and carers, and how working in partnership has directly informed and shaped our research priorities, the delivery of this research, and its dissemination and impacts. Our innovative, arts-based approaches to outreach and PPI methods to ensure inclusion of diverse voices and building networks to support inclusion.
