Here's our list of the 10 Best UNESCO World Heritage Sites in China that you don't want to miss. Currently, China and Italy are tied with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites at 55. China has 37 cultural heritage sites, 14 natural heritage sites, and 4 cultural and natural heritage sites. Our 10 best UNESCO World Heritage Sites in China are the following: #1. Suzhou - City in China, west of Shanghai. Known for its canals, bridges, and classical gardens. #2. Lijiang - a city in the northwest part of China's Yunnan province, is home to the Naxi and several other ethnic minority groups. #3. Jiuzhaigou National Park - a network of valleys in China’s Sichuan province. In the northern Shuzheng Valley, Nuorilang Waterfall cascades from the edge of a large tree-fringed lake. #4. The Wudang Mountains - a small mountain range in the northwestern part of Hubei, China, just south of Shiyan. They are home to a famous complex of Taoist temples and monasteries associated with the god Xuanwu. #5. The Potala Palace is a dzong fortress in the city of Lhasa, in Tibet, China. It was the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas from 1649 to 1959, has been a museum since then, and is a World Heritage Site since 1994. #6. The Mogao Caves -  also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes or Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, form a system of 500 temples 25 km southeast of the center of Dunhuang #7. The Great Wall of China - is the collective name of a series of fortification systems generally built across the historical northern borders of China to protect and consolidate territories of Chinese states and empires against various nomadic groups #8. The Forbidden City - is a palace complex in central Beijing, China. It houses the Palace Museum, and was the former Chinese imperial palace and state residence of the Emperor of China from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty, between 1420 and 1924. #9. The Longmen Grottoes - or Longmen Caves are some of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Housing tens of thousands of statues of Shakyamuni Buddha and his disciples. #10. Huanglong - is a scenic and historic interest area in the northwest part of Sichuan, China.
