I noticed his sensory acuity and calibration skills are extraordinary. He can see people shifting states just by watching their bodies. I volunteered for a demonstration and while we were working he asked if I felt sudden sensations in my feet. He was right. I had. He asked if I felt sudden sensations in my hands. Indeed I did. How he was able to see this was a mystery. Later during one of the breaks I asked how he had honed his sensory acuity. Milton Erickson, Steve's mentor and also the father of modern hypnosis, was well known for his ability to pick up nonverbal communication from people. Supposedly he could see the pulse in a person's neck change. He could even tell if a woman was cheating on her husband by the way she sat in a chair. Steve explained that the peripheral vision was the most sensitive to picking ups subtle changes. It seems counter intuitive because the periphery of our vision is usually a bit unfocused and hazy. It exactly this reason, not have a focal point though that allows you to pick up subtle changes. Another word for this is soft eyes. Instead of focusing on any one spot on a person you're coaching or persuading, release your focus and notice what you see in the periphery.  It can also be trance inducing to focus on one spot and then open your vision to soft eyes and do this back and forth.
