The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond, like its prequel, has already sparked controversy. Critics argue that the film advances a Hindu majoritarian narrative. Both the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala have accused it of portraying Muslims as “love jihadists” who allegedly lure Hindu women into marriage with the hidden aim of religious conversion. The film’s trailer has intensified the debate. One scene shows a Hindu woman being force-fed beef by radical Islamists, a moment that quickly triggered sharp reactions across social media. While supporters defend the film as fiction or political commentary, many online users have responded with satire and memes, questioning its claims and tone. The controversy triggers a larger question: how does cinema handle fraught subjects such as migration, conversion, faith, and gender? And when does storytelling begin to harden into ideology? Frontline’s upcoming webinar, moderated by journalist Nidheesh M.K., brings together film critic C.S. Venkiteswaran, lawyer and activist Maneesha Radhakrishnan, and filmmaker Don Palathara. The panel will discuss how the film constructs fear, how it circulates in today’s media ecosystem, and what it tells us about the growing overlap between cinema and political messaging.
