Using Ossabaw Miniature Swine Models to Mimic Human Disease

Miniature swine are the premier coronary vascular research model and the Ossabaw breed in particular extends this strength as the most widely used large animal model of metabolic syndrome and comorbidities. Examples of the study of numerous systems and comorbidities include: skeletal muscle fiber typing, exercise, polycystic ovary syndrome, urinary bladder dysfunction, intestinal microbiome, immune cell signaling, fatty liver and steatohepatitis, renal fibrosis, retinopathy, and aging. Michael Sturek, MS, PhD, presented CorVus Biomedical's research on this innovative animal model and its uses in exploring translational interventions such as cryolipolysis, insulin pharmacodynamics, coronary stenting, and vascular targeting and imaging. Additionally, Sturek also introduced gene editing of Ossabaw miniature pigs.
