EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #86: SKIDBY Skidby is a small village situated about 6 miles to the Northwest of the city of Hull in East Yorkshire, lying on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. It’s just over 2 miles from the town of Cottingham Skidby’s boundaries contain mainly agricultural land, both in the hills of the wolds and the low-lying land around them. There are two small hamlets within the boundaries too - Eppleworth and Raywell. A linear village, Skidby is laid out along one very long main street which features most of it’s amenities like a church, a village hall, a pub and a primary school. The village's name is of Scandinavian origin. It’s thought mean “dwelling of a person called Skítr” or "Skyti's farm". Some believe it to mean “firewood place” or “dirty place” instead This certainly isn’t a dirty place though. Despite being located in the countryside away from suburban Hull, this is a village thriving with activity, and its grown a bit in recent times Once a sleepy farm village ecclesiastically associated with Cottingham until 1857, Skidby now flies completely solo. A lot of people who live here commute to work in Hull or York Most people will know Skidby for one particular landmark which is something of a tourist attraction – Skidby Windmill – which is the last working windmill in the East Riding of Yorkshire Beautiful village this one, I loved this walk.
