Dalian (大连), located in Liaoning (辽宁) province, China, is a significant sub-provincial port city known for being the southernmost city of Liaoning as well as the entire Northeast region of China. It is the second-largest city in Liaoning, following the provincial capital, Shenyang, and ranks as the third-most populous city in Northeast China. Dalian's strategic position on the southern tip of the Liaodong peninsula allows it to border Yingkou, Anshan, and Dandong, and it shares maritime boundaries with several other cities across different bodies of water. The city has a rich history of foreign influence and control, having been occupied by Russia and Japan at different times. Originally a small fishing village known as Qingniwa (青泥洼) or Qingniwaqiao (青泥洼桥), it was developed into a commercial town by the Russian Empire in 1898 and renamed Dalniy. After the Russo-Japanese War, Japan took control, renaming it Dairen. It was known as Port Arthur and Ryojun during its time as the original Port Arthur, now the Lüshunkou district. Dalian's modern era began in 1950 when it merged with nearby Lüshun and was renamed Lüda, a name it retained until 1981 when it was renamed back to Dalian. The city has since developed into a financial, shipping, and logistics hub for Northeast Asia, boasting a high Human Development Index (HDI) and being recognized for its livability and global city status. The city's geography is marked by its location on the Korea Bay, north of the Yellow Sea, and its control over the majority of the Liaodong Peninsula and surrounding islands. Dalian experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate, with warm, wet summers and cold, windy, dry winters. Its economy is diverse, with significant contributions from the shipping, logistics, and technology sectors. Dalian is also noted for its educational institutions, including Dalian University of Technology and Dalian Maritime University, which are part of China's prestigious Project 211 universities.
